PROSTATE RESULTS 2024

PROSTATE CANCER SCREENING RESULTS We are delighted to have provided Prostate Cancer (PCa) Screening for the East Suffolk PCa Support Group’s third annual event at Fitology Prostate Cancer Screening Project At the event in the FITOLOGY Studio we tested a total of 142 men from whom 135 had samples processed by the Ipswich Hospital laboratory and present the statistics below With 56,000 new cases every year, PCa is now the commonest cancer in the UK. We have no national NHS screening programme despite clear evidence that screening over 20 years with regular PSA tests can halve the PCa death rate. The NHS Prostate Cancer Risk Management Programme entitles men over 50 to have a PSA test, but many requests are still refused by local GPs and men are advised not to test “till symptoms arise” – too late for screening! The Suffolk and NE Essex Public Health consultants continue to oppose PCa screening despite the clear evidence of its benefit Event Statistics: RISK but in the Green Zone: * High 41 * Intermediate 26 * Low 57 ABNORMAL: * Amber 6 * Red 5 TOTAL : 135 men tested There has been an increase in attendees from 94 in 2023 to 142 reflecting increased public awareness of PCa and screening. Of the 11 abnormal Amber and Red results, it can be estimated that approximately 2-3 will have an underlying cancer and of these, 2 will be aggressive. In simple terms, this single testing session will save 2 lives. To date 4 men have had cancers identified from the Fitology events representing a 1.7% find rate, nearly twice the 0.9% rate of the national breast cancer screening programme In the UK 1 in 8 white, Caucasian and 1 in 4 black men of west African or Caribbean descent will develop PCa in their lifetime.
